The Delhi–Mussoorie route is one of the most travelled hill-station runs in north India — and one that rewards careful cab choice more than most. The journey covers roughly 263 km: a mostly flat expressway and highway run from Delhi to Dehradun (around 255 km), then a steep, winding 34 km hill climb from Dehradun city up to Mussoorie's Library Chowk. The hill section is where your driver and vehicle actually matter — a slow, experienced driver on the Rajpur Road climb handles the hairpins and oncoming traffic far more safely than an unfamiliar one.
Chauhan Taxi Services is based in Dehradun — which means we run the Delhi–Mussoorie route on both sides of the hill, not just the plains leg. Our drivers know the Mussoorie road in rain, in fog, in peak-season weekend traffic, and late at night. When we say we know Kempty Falls Road and Library Chowk, it is because our office is 34 km below them.
Mussoorie itself — the Queen of Hills — sits at 2,005 metres on a long Himalayan ridge above Dehradun, offering views north toward the Garhwal Himalayan peaks (Bandarpunch visible on clear days) and south across the Doon valley. The Mall Road promenade, Gun Hill ropeway, Kempty Falls, Lal Tibba viewpoint, Company Garden, and the charming colonial-era hill station lanes of Landour make it one of the most varied and enjoyable short-break destinations in India.
Planning to leave Delhi on a Friday evening? Avoid it if you can. The Dehradun–Mussoorie road on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings in peak season (May–June, October) becomes severely congested — a 34 km climb that normally takes 1 hour can extend to 2–3 hours. We recommend early morning Saturday departures instead. Our drivers will advise on the best departure time for your specific date when you book.
🚗 Mussoorie's Mall Road area restricts heavy vehicles and taxis at peak hours — your driver will drop you at the nearest permitted point and local transport (horse/golf cart) covers the final stretch to your hotel if needed.
Mussoorie is approximately 263 km from Delhi — around 230 km of highway to Dehradun, then the famous 34 km Rajpur Road hill climb to Mussoorie at 2,005 metres.
The Queen of Hills has more than just a Mall Road — from Landour's colonial-era lanes to Kempty Falls, from Gun Hill's Himalayan panorama to the quiet ridges above Lal Tibba.
Mussoorie's Mall Road is the social heart of the hill station — a 2 km promenade of shops, restaurants, cafes, and viewpoints running along the ridge above Dehradun. Most hotels and guesthouses are within walking distance. The parallel Camel's Back Road — named for the camel-shaped ridge it follows — is the quieter, more scenic alternative for an evening walk with views over the Doon valley on one side and the Garhwal peaks on the other. The road gets its name from the distinctive camel-hump shape of the ridge when viewed from Dehradun below.
Gun Hill is the second-highest peak in Mussoorie at 2,024 m and offers the best 360-degree panoramic views from the hill station — the Garhwal Himalayan range to the north (with Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and Gangotri peaks on clear days), the Doon valley to the south, and Mussoorie's ridge spread below. Accessible by a short ropeway (cable car) from Mall Road or on foot via a 20-minute walk. The name comes from a cannon that was fired here at noon during the British period to allow residents to set their watches. Worth visiting at sunrise or just after dawn for the clearest Himalayan views.
Kempty Falls — 15 km from Mussoorie on the Yamunotri road toward Chakrata — is one of the most visited natural waterfalls in Uttarakhand, a tiered cascade descending into a wide pool at the base. The falls were developed as a picnic spot by the British administrator John Mekinon in the 1830s and retain the name Kempty (a corruption of "Camp Tea") from that era. The pool is popular for bathing in summer and the surrounding forested hillside makes it a pleasant morning excursion. Go early to beat the crowds — by noon on weekends the site is extremely busy.
Lal Tibba at 2,275 m is the highest point in Mussoorie — a viewpoint with a large telescope through which the snow peaks of the Garhwal range, including Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Chaukhamba, are visible on clear winter mornings. The Landour cantonment area around Lal Tibba has a distinctly different character from Mall Road — quieter, greener, and more residential, with colonial bungalows and church spires among the deodar cedars. Ruskin Bond, India's most celebrated nature writer, lives in Landour — the area is closely associated with his writing on the Mussoorie hills.
The Company Garden (also called Municipal Garden) — near the Library Chowk end of Mussoorie — is a well-maintained terraced garden and small amusement park popular with families. A boating lake, flower beds, children's rides, and a small fountain make it the standard family attraction in Mussoorie town. It is also one of the quieter, more pleasant alternatives to Mall Road for an evening stroll with young children. Entry has a small fee. The garden is best in spring (April–May) when the Himalayan rhododendrons and seasonal flowers are in full bloom.
Dhanaulti — 24 km from Mussoorie on the Chamba road at 2,286 m — is a small, extremely peaceful hill destination known for its deodar and rhododendron forests, the Eco Park timber cottages, and winter snow. It is notably quieter than Mussoorie and most travellers visiting Mussoorie add a half-day Dhanaulti excursion. In winter (December to February) Dhanaulti often has snow on the ground when Mussoorie does not, making it a popular add-on for families hoping to experience snowfall. Our Delhi to Dhanaulti taxi page covers this extension.
