The itinerary below represents a standard 12-day Char Dham Yatra from Dehradun, covering all four dhams in the traditional order. Days can be adjusted based on your group's pace, the time you wish to spend at each dham, and weather conditions on the high-altitude sections.
Your Char Dham Yatra begins. Your driver arrives at your Dehradun address early morning and the cab departs for Barkot — the base for Yamunotri. The route passes through Mussoorie (optional brief stop), Chamba, and the scenic Yamuna valley, steadily ascending through dense forests and mountain villages.
Barkot is a calm hill town at approximately 1,220 metres — a good overnight halt before the Yamunotri trek day. Approximately 175 km, 5 to 6 hours of driving.
The most physically demanding day of the yatra for many pilgrims. The cab drives from Barkot to Janki Chatti (the last road point), where a 6 km trek to Yamunotri begins. Horse, palki (doli), and pony services are available at Janki Chatti for those who need them.
Yamunotri temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and sits at 3,293 metres. The sacred Surya Kund hot spring beside the temple is used to cook rice and potatoes in the scalding water — a cherished offering ritual. After darshan, trek back to Janki Chatti and the cab returns to Barkot.
A transitional drive day from the Yamunotri side to Uttarkashi — the base town for Gangotri. The route passes through Dharasu Bend and follows the Bhagirathi river valley north towards Uttarkashi, a busy mountain town at 1,158 metres that serves as a major halt on the Gangotri highway.
Uttarkashi is also home to the famous Vishwanath Temple and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The town has good accommodation, restaurants, and services — a good rest day if your group needs it. Approximately 100 km, 3 to 4 hours.
The drive from Uttarkashi to Gangotri is one of the most beautiful sections of the entire Char Dham circuit — following the Bhagirathi river through deep gorges, past the apple orchards and cedar forests of Harsil, and ascending to Gangotri at 3,048 metres. Unlike Yamunotri and Kedarnath, Gangotri is road-accessible.
The Gangotri temple sits directly on the banks of the Bhagirathi river at the spot where King Bhagirath performed penance to bring the Ganga to earth. The river runs emerald green here — a sight unlike anywhere else. After darshan, the cab returns to Uttarkashi for the night. Approximately 100 km each way, 3 hours each direction.
A long cross-mountain drive from the Gangotri side to the Kedarnath side. The cab traverses Uttarkashi, crosses the Tehri dam area (with views of Asia's largest rockfill dam and the reservoir), continues through Srinagar Garhwal, and climbs to Guptkashi — the overnight base for Kedarnath.
Guptkashi is an important pilgrimage town in its own right, home to the Vishwanath Temple and the sacred confluence of rivers below. Approximately 200 km, 5 to 7 hours depending on road conditions. This is among the longer driving days.
The most physically demanding day of the entire Char Dham circuit. The cab drives from Guptkashi to Sonprayag (the last point for private vehicles), where government-approved jeep sharing begins to Gaurikund. From Gaurikund, the 16 to 18 km trek to Kedarnath begins.
The trek to Kedarnath at 3,583 metres is arduous but deeply rewarding. Ponies, pithoos (porters), and helicopter services are available from Phata/Guptkashi for those unable to trek. Pilgrims stay overnight at Kedarnath to attend the morning aarti the following day.
Early morning Kedarnath Abhishek aarti (booking required) followed by darshan of the main Jyotirlinga — one of the most powerful spiritual experiences of the entire yatra. After darshan, trek back down to Gaurikund, where the cab rejoins the group at Sonprayag.
The cab then drives to Pipalkoti — a town on the Badrinath highway that serves as the overnight halt before Badrinath. The route passes through Rudraprayag and the Alaknanda valley. Approximately 100 km from Gaurikund, 3 to 4 hours.
The final ascent to the last and most revered of the four dhams. The cab climbs from Pipalkoti through Joshimath — the winter seat of Lord Badri — past Vishnu Prayag confluence, and ascends to Badrinath at 3,133 metres through dramatic mountain scenery.
The approach to Badrinath past Pandukeshwar and through the final gorge is stunning — the snow-capped peak of Nilkantha (6,596 m) frames the background behind the temple. Early evening darshan available if arriving before temple closing.
The sacred morning Abbishek puja at Badrinath begins before dawn — one of the most spiritually powerful moments of the entire yatra. After the main darshan, the cab takes the group to Mana Village — the last inhabited village before the Tibet border and India's last village.
Mana holds profound mythological significance: Vyas Gufa (cave where Vyas wrote the Mahabharata), Ganesh Gufa, Saraswati river (which disappears underground here), and Vasudhara Falls (3 km trek) are all accessible. Return to Badrinath for the evening aarti.
The return journey begins. The cab descends from Badrinath through Joshimath and the Alaknanda valley, passing through the panchand Prayags — Nandprayag (confluence of Nandakini and Alaknanda) and Karnprayag (confluence of Pindar and Alaknanda) — en route to Rudraprayag.
Rudraprayag is where the Mandakini (from Kedarnath side) meets the Alaknanda — a sacred confluence. Approximately 160 km, 4 to 5 hours. A relatively peaceful driving day after the intense schedule of the previous days.
The cab descends further towards the plains, passing through Devprayag — where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the Ganga. This is one of the most sacred confluences in Hinduism and a mandatory stop for yatris returning from Char Dham.
After Devprayag the mountains gradually give way to the foothills and the cab arrives at Rishikesh — the traditional "gateway to the Himalayan shrines." Many pilgrims choose to attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat to mark the end of the mountain portion of the yatra. Approximately 140 km, 4 hours.
The final day of your Char Dham Yatra. After morning rituals in Rishikesh — a dip in the Ganga at Triveni Ghat or Ram Jhula — the cab departs for Dehradun. Many pilgrims choose to stop at Haridwar for Har Ki Pauri before the final drive home — a beautiful way to close the sacred circuit where the Ganga first touches the plains.
Your Char Dham Yatra concludes in Dehradun, completing a circuit of approximately 1,000 km of mountain roads across 12 days, four sacred temples, and two source rivers of the Ganga. Your driver returns you to your Dehradun address — completing the journey exactly where it began.
