Perched atop a pine-covered ridge at 1,890 metres in the Bageshwar district of Kumaon, Kausani is one of Uttarakhand's most beloved and unhurried hill stations. It overlooks the Someshwar valley on one side and the Garur and Baijnath valleys on the other, offering what Mahatma Gandhi described as the finest mountain panorama he had ever seen — a claim that earned the town its enduring title, "Switzerland of India."
Gandhi visited Kausani in 1929 and stayed for 14 days at what is now the Anasakti Ashram. It was during this stay, moved by the serenity of the place and the Himalayan panorama before him, that he wrote his celebrated commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, titled Anasakti Yoga — the Yoga of Non-Attachment. Kausani is also the birthplace of Sumitranandan Pant, one of the greatest Hindi poets of the 20th century, who drew deeply on the natural beauty of these hills in his work.
The view from Kausani is the defining experience of the destination. On clear mornings, a 300 km panoramic sweep of Himalayan peaks — Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Trishul (7,120 m), Panchachuli (6,904 m), Nanda Kot, and many more — fills the horizon. The sunrise turns these peaks orange and gold in a sequence that photographers and first-time visitors alike find difficult to describe.
Kausani is equally known for its tea estates — one of the finest high-altitude teas in Uttarakhand is grown here. The 208-acre Kausani Tea Estate produces organic teas exported to Germany, Australia, and the US. Visiting the tea garden, watching the processing, and tasting fresh-brewed Kausani tea is an experience unique to this hill station. Our outstation taxi service from Dehradun covers Kausani with experienced Kumaon highway drivers and fixed package fares.
Kausani is approximately 370 km from Dehradun via Kashipur — a 9 to 11 hour Kumaon highway journey through Haldwani, Nainital, and Almora before reaching the Someshwar ridge.
Your cab driver stays on call throughout your Kausani stay for day excursions to all nearby attractions — built into your package fare.
The most historically significant site in Kausani — the ashram where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for 14 days in 1929 and wrote his Gita commentary Anasakti Yoga. The simple whitewashed ashram is now a study centre and museum with Gandhi's photographs, writings, and personal belongings, set against a spectacular backdrop of Himalayan peaks.
The defining experience of Kausani. Wake before dawn, walk to the sunrise point, and watch the first light paint Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli in gold and orange. The 300 km Himalayan panorama is considered among the widest unobstructed peak views in Kumaon — an unmissable start to every morning in Kausani.
A sprawling 208-acre high-altitude tea garden producing some of Uttarakhand's finest organic tea — exported to Germany, Australia, and the US. Walk through the green rows of tea plants, watch the processing at the factory, and taste freshly brewed Kausani tea in the garden setting. The best time to visit is June to September when the estate is lushest.
Dedicated to the great Hindi poet who was born in Kausani, this museum in his childhood home displays original manuscripts, letters, photographs, and personal belongings. Pant's poetry was deeply inspired by the Himalayan landscape of Kausani — the museum gives rich context for understanding why this place produces such powerful writing.
A forest waterfall and cave temple about 12 km from Kausani, set in dense jungle with a natural rock cavern believed to have been the meditation site of Rishi Kaushik. A gentle half-day excursion combining forest walks, waterfall photography, and a small cave temple visit — ideal for nature lovers and families.
Founded by Sarla Behn, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, this women's empowerment centre about 1 km from Kausani is both a spiritual retreat and a working self-reliance community. The ashram runs programmes in weaving, agriculture, and cottage craft — a living example of Gandhian philosophy in the Kumaon hills.
One of the most significant ancient temples in Kumaon, built during the 12th–13th century by the Katyuri kings on the banks of the Gomti river. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple complex houses shrines of Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, Chandika, Kuber, Surya, and Brahma — each with intricate carvings that have survived eight centuries remarkably intact.
A sacred town at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers, known for the Bagnath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and as the base camp for treks toward the Pindari and Kafni glaciers. Bageshwar combines cultural heritage with natural mountain beauty and is the district headquarters of the district in which Kausani sits.
The cultural capital of Kumaon — famous for the Chitai Golu Devta temple, Nanda Devi temple, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, and Kasar Devi hilltop views. Almora is a natural day excursion from Kausani and also a convenient base for those wanting more accommodation options while visiting the surrounding Kumaon heritage circuit.
Per-day rates by vehicle type. For Kausani — a 370 km journey best enjoyed over 2–3 nights — we recommend a package quote covering all cab days and excursions in one confirmed fare.
| Vehicle | Seating | Per Day Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Swift Dzire / Etios) | 4 + 1 | ₹4,000 / day | Couples, solo travellers, light luggage |
| Maruti Ertiga | 6 + 1 | ₹5,000 / day | Small groups, families of 4–5 |
| Toyota Innova | 7 + 1 | ₹5,500 / day | Families, multi-day Kumaon circuits |

Per-day rates cover fuel, driver allowance, and standard tolls. Hotel stays and meals are not included. A typical Dehradun–Kausani trip runs 3 to 4 cab days (Day 1: drive to Kausani; Days 2–3: sunrise point, tea garden, Baijnath, Bageshwar excursions; Day 4: return via Almora or Nainital). Innova or Innova Crysta is recommended for the 370 km run and mountain roads from Almora onwards.
