Har Ki Pauri is the most revered ghat in Haridwar and among the holiest sites in all of Hinduism. Its name means "Feet of the Lord" in Sanskrit — "Har" meaning Lord Shiva, "Ki" meaning of, and "Pauri" meaning steps — and it is believed to be the exact spot where the River Ganga descends from the mountains and enters the plains.
The ghat holds extraordinary mythological significance. According to tradition, Lord Vishnu left his footprint here — still preserved on a stone wall — and Lord Brahma performed a sacred yagna on this very site. The central bathing platform, Brahmakund, is the most sacred point, believed to be where drops of the divine nectar (Amrit) fell from the celestial Kumbh during Samudra Manthan. This is why Haridwar is one of the four venues for the Kumbh Mela. The ghat was constructed by King Vikramaditya in the 1st century BC in memory of his brother Bharthari, who meditated here on the Ganga's banks.
Every evening at sunset, the Ganga Aarti transforms Har Ki Pauri into one of the most spiritually charged spectacles in India. Brahmin priests hold multi-tiered brass lamps, incense fills the air, temple bells ring, and thousands of diyas float downstream on the Ganga — a scene that leaves every first-time visitor speechless and brings repeat visitors back year after year.
From Dehradun, Har Ki Pauri is just 55 km — approximately 1 to 1.5 hours by cab. Our Dehradun to Haridwar taxi service includes direct drop at Har Ki Pauri ghat, with pickup arranged for your return or onward journey to Rishikesh and beyond.
Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar is just 55 km from Dehradun — one of the closest major pilgrimage sites. The journey takes 1 to 1.5 hours by cab via the National Highway, making it an ideal half-day or full-day trip.
A visit to Har Ki Pauri without witnessing the Ganga Aarti is incomplete. Here is everything you need to know to plan the most meaningful experience.
The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is one of the most visually and spiritually powerful rituals in India. As the sun sets, Brahmin priests take their positions at Brahmakund dressed in saffron and white, each holding a large multi-tiered brass lamp (the famous "aarti diya"). The air fills with incense, the sound of conch shells and temple bells rises, and mantras are chanted in unison.
For approximately 45 minutes, the priests perform the synchronized flame ritual, rotating the lamps in circular patterns. Simultaneously, devotees release flower-filled diyas onto the Ganga — hundreds of small flames floating downstream in the darkening river, creating the iconic golden glow that has made this ceremony world-famous.
Perched atop Bilwa Parvat, the Mansa Devi temple is reached by ropeway or a 1.5 km uphill trek. Dedicated to Goddess Mansa — "she who fulfils wishes" — it offers panoramic views of Haridwar and the Ganga valley below. One of the Siddhpeeths in Haridwar.
Situated on Neel Parvat across the Ganga from Har Ki Pauri, the Chandi Devi temple is another of Haridwar's Siddhpeeths. Accessible by ropeway or a 3 km trek through dense forest, the temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD.
One of the oldest temples in Haridwar, dedicated to Goddess Maya — the presiding deity of Haridwar. Along with Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, Maya Devi completes the trio of Siddhpeeths that make Haridwar one of India's most important pilgrimage cities.
Located in Kankhal, a suburb of Haridwar, the Daksha Mahadev temple marks the site where Sati — Lord Shiva's consort — immolated herself after her father King Daksha insulted Shiva. A deeply significant Shaivite pilgrimage site with ancient history.
The massive yoga and Ayurveda complex founded by Baba Ramdev on the outskirts of Haridwar. A fascinating destination for those interested in yoga, meditation, and traditional Indian medicine — with a large campus, museum, and Ayurvedic products available.
Rishikesh is just 25 km from Haridwar, making it a natural extension of any Haridwar day trip from Dehradun. Triveni Ghat's evening Aarti, Laxman Jhula suspension bridge over the Ganga, and the yoga capital's unique energy make the Haridwar–Rishikesh circuit a must-do one-day tour.
Per-day and one-way fares by vehicle type. At just 55 km, a Haridwar trip is one of the most affordable outstation runs from Dehradun — ideal for a half-day or full-day visit.
