Tucked away in the Pithoragarh district of Kumaon — Uttarakhand's easternmost Himalayan district — Berinag is one of India's lesser-known hill stations and one of its most rewarding. Perched at 1,895 metres (6,217 feet) above sea level, the town commands an extraordinary panoramic view of the Greater Himalayas stretching from the Garhwal ranges all the way to the Nepal border peaks, with Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Trishul, and Rajrambha clearly visible on clear days.
Berinag gets its name from its famous Nag Devta temple — "Bedinag" in local pronunciation — a shrine dedicated to the serpent deity, reflecting a unique religious tradition dating back to the 14th century. The town is also celebrated for its colonial-era tea estates, which once produced some of the finest brick-teas supplied to London tea houses. Walking through the lush Berinag tea gardens remains one of the most peaceful experiences in the Kumaon hills.
The drive from Dehradun to Berinag is approximately 453 km via Kashipur, Nainital, and Almora — a long but scenic Kumaon highway journey. Our outstation taxi service from Dehradun covers this full route with fixed fares and drivers who know the Kumaon roads well, including the final Almora–Berinag mountain stretch.
Unlike Nainital or Mussoorie, Berinag has no tourist infrastructure to speak of — no busy markets, no cable cars, no hotel zones. It is a true Himalayan escape for photographers, birdwatchers, and travellers seeking silence and unspoiled mountain views.
Berinag is approximately 453 km from Dehradun via Kashipur, Nainital, and Almora — a scenic Kumaon highway journey through the foothills and mountains of eastern Uttarakhand.

Perched at the top of Berinag Hill, this ancient Nag Devta temple gives the town its name. Dedicated to the serpent deity and believed to date back to the 14th century, it is the most sacred site in the area and offers commanding views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Several other snake temples — Dhaulinag, Kalinag, and Vasukinag — are scattered across the town.
Berinag's colonial-era tea estates are one of its most distinctive features — the town was once famous for producing fine brick-tea supplied to London tea houses. Walking through the lush green tea gardens, breathing in the aroma of fresh Kumaon tea leaves, is one of the most peaceful experiences the Pithoragarh hills offer. Sunrise from the tea estates with Himalayan peaks as a backdrop is unmissable.
Berinag offers an extraordinary panoramic view of the Greater Himalayas — from the Garhwal peaks in the west to the Nepal ranges in the east. On clear days, Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Panchachuli, Trishul, and Rajrambha are clearly visible. October and November are the best months for unobstructed peak views. A photographer's and sunrise-chaser's dream.
Located approximately 5 km from Berinag at Uttarayan, the Tripura Devi temple is a well-known and revered shrine in the Pithoragarh region. Surrounded by dense forest and mountain scenery, it is an easy and rewarding half-day excursion from Berinag that combines temple darshan with a scenic forest drive.
A peaceful tea garden hill station at 2,010 metres, Chaukori is Berinag's closest prominent neighbour and is better equipped for tourism — it has more accommodation options, a tea factory, and equally stunning Himalayan views. A popular add-on to any Berinag trip, and just 22 km away on the same mountain road.
A small hill town in Pithoragarh district on the pilgrim route to Kailash Mansarovar, situated at 1,725 metres. Didihat features scenic trekking trails and the ancient Shri Mahadev Mandir temple surrounded by dense forest and the Nar-Narayan mountain range. Worth a stopover on the Berinag–Pithoragarh circuit.
One of Uttarakhand's most mystical sites — a 160-metre-long limestone cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, accessible through a narrow tunnel entrance. The cave walls are adorned with natural stalagmite formations that pilgrims associate with various Hindu deities. A must-visit for its unique spiritual atmosphere and geological wonder, it is approximately 35 km from Berinag.
Gangolihat, about 40 km from Berinag, is home to the Haat Kalika temple — a revered Goddess Kali shrine nestled in dense deodar forests and considered highly sacred by the Kumaon Rifles regiment of the Indian Army. The temple attracts large numbers of devotees, particularly during Navratri. The surrounding village has an authentic, uncommercialized character.
The district headquarters of Pithoragarh — often called the "Little Kashmir of Uttarakhand" — sits in the scenic Soar Valley with views of the Nepal Himalaya. Key attractions include the Pithoragarh Fort (built 1789 by Gorkhas), Chandak Hill, Mostamanu Temple, and it serves as the gateway for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. An ideal overnight excursion from Berinag for travellers staying 3+ nights.
Fixed per-day rates by vehicle type. For Berinag — a 453 km journey ideally covered over 2–3 nights — we strongly recommend requesting a full package quote for one consolidated fare.
