Jammu is the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir — a large, historically rich city on the Tawi river, approximately 574 km from Delhi via NH-44. Known as the "City of Temples" for its extraordinary concentration of ancient and significant Hindu shrines, Jammu is one of North India's most important pilgrimage cities and the primary transit hub for the entire Jammu & Kashmir region.
The city's most famous draw is its role as the gateway to Vaishno Devi — one of the most visited Hindu pilgrimage shrines in India, receiving over 8 million devotees annually. The Vaishno Devi cave shrine in the Trikuta mountains is located at Katra, approximately 50 km from Jammu city, and the Jammu–Katra highway is among the most heavily travelled pilgrimage corridors in the country. Most Delhi pilgrims take a direct cab to Katra itself, though many overnight in Jammu first. We offer both Delhi → Jammu and Delhi → Katra direct bookings.
Beyond pilgrimage, Jammu has a rich heritage of temples, palaces, and markets. The Raghunath Temple complex in the heart of the city — a large complex of seven temples dedicated to Lord Rama, built in the 19th century by Maharaja Gulab Singh — is a major landmark. The Bahu Fort, the Peer Kho Cave temple, the vibrant Raghunath Bazaar, and the Amar Mahal Palace (now a museum) make Jammu a rewarding city for visitors with historical and cultural interests. Jammu is also the natural starting point for day trips to Patnitop (87 km) and the onward journey to the Kashmir valley via the Banihal tunnel or Banihal pass.
Jammu Railway Station is one of the busiest in North India for pilgrimage traffic. Many travellers find a pre-booked cab from Delhi significantly more comfortable than train travel for this route — door-to-door pickup in Delhi, direct drop at any Jammu hotel, guesthouse, or Katra dharamshala, with no luggage handling at stations.
Jammu is approximately 574 km from Delhi via NH-44 — India's longest national highway, a mostly 4–6 lane expressway through Punjab and the Jammu foothills. Drive time is 10–12 hours depending on traffic through Ambala and Ludhiana.
From one of India's most visited pilgrimage shrines to ancient temples, hill stations, and the gateway to the Kashmir valley — Jammu and its surroundings offer a rich and varied travel experience.
The Vaishno Devi cave shrine in the Trikuta mountains is one of the most visited Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, receiving over 8 million devotees every year. The shrine is dedicated to the goddess Vaishno Devi and is located at approximately 5,200 feet above sea level — reached by a 12–14 km trek from Katra base camp. The Katra helipad and battery-operated vehicle services are also available for portions of the route. Most Delhi pilgrims book a direct cab to Katra (50 km beyond Jammu). We offer dedicated Delhi → Katra cab service with overnight departure to arrive fresh at Katra for the yatra.
The Raghunath Temple complex in the heart of Jammu city is one of the largest temple complexes in North India — a cluster of seven interconnected temples dedicated to Lord Rama and various forms of Vishnu, built by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1835 and completed by his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The main temple's gold-plated sanctum and the extraordinary collection of shaligram shila stones (hundreds of sacred Vishnu stones brought from Nepal's Gandaki river) make this a site of immense religious significance and architectural interest.
Bahu Fort, built over 3,000 years ago on a rock above the Tawi river, is one of the oldest structures in Jammu. The fort complex houses the Bahu Mata temple — dedicated to goddess Kali — and a well-maintained Mughal garden. The view of the Tawi river from the fort ramparts at dawn or dusk is among Jammu's most picturesque scenes. The temple is particularly visited on Tuesdays and Sundays when large numbers of devotees attend. The fort-garden combination makes for a pleasant two-hour outing from any Jammu hotel.
Patnitop (2,024 m) is a charming hill station in the Udhampur district — 87 km from Jammu on the Jammu–Srinagar highway — with alpine meadows, pine forests, and views of the Chenab river valley below. In winter, Patnitop receives snowfall and is a popular snow destination for Jammu families. In summer, the meadows are green and the weather pleasantly cool. Nathatop viewpoint, Sanasar meadow (26 km from Patnitop), and the Shiv Khori cave temple (80 km from Jammu) are nearby extensions worth combining with a Patnitop visit.
The Amar Mahal Palace — a striking French chateau-style royal residence built in the 19th century for Maharaja Amar Singh — now functions as a museum housing a remarkable collection of Pahari miniature paintings, royal portraits, gold artefacts, and the famous golden throne of the Dogra rulers. The palace sits on a hilltop above the Tawi river with beautiful views of Jammu city. The museum's Pahari painting collection is considered one of the finest of its kind and gives a vivid window into the artistic traditions of the Dogra court.
Jammu is the gateway to the Kashmir valley — Srinagar is approximately 260 km from Jammu via the Banihal tunnel (or Banihal pass in summer). The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway passes through Udhampur, Ramban, Banihal, and Qazigund before reaching the Kashmir valley. Many Delhi travellers use Jammu as an overnight stop on the way to Srinagar's Dal Lake, houseboats, and Gulmarg — all reachable in a single cab day from Jammu. We offer extended Delhi → Jammu → Srinagar cab packages on request.
Indicative one-way fares for the 574 km Delhi–Jammu run. Exact fare depends on your NCR pickup point. Add ₹600–₹1,200 for Katra extension (50 km further) depending on vehicle.
