Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the highest of the four Char Dham shrines, situated at 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. For devotees across Delhi and the NCR region, the Kedarnath Yatra is among the most profound spiritual journeys in Hinduism — and the road to it begins the moment you step into your cab.
The cab journey from Delhi to Kedarnath covers 443 km to Sonprayag — the last point private vehicles can reach. From Sonprayag, local government-approved shared jeeps cover the 5 km to Gaurikund, which is the traditional starting point of the trek. The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath temple is approximately 18 km through stunning Himalayan terrain, climbing from 1,982 metres at Gaurikund to 3,583 metres at the shrine.
The cab route from Delhi passes through Haridwar and Rishikesh — both natural stops for a blessing and an overnight rest — before climbing through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Agastmuni, and Ukhimath to reach Sonprayag. The Rishikesh–Sonprayag stretch is fully on mountain roads through deep gorges, so a well-maintained vehicle and an experienced Uttarakhand hill driver make all the difference to how rested pilgrims arrive at the trek base.
Chauhan Taxi Services provides Innova, Innova Crysta, and Tempo Traveller for the Delhi–Sonprayag leg with drivers who are experienced on the Rishikesh–Rudraprayag–Sonprayag mountain corridor. We also offer the complete Char Dham Yatra taxi package covering all four dhams from Delhi or Dehradun.
The Kedarnath Yatra from Delhi is a three-leg journey: a long cab ride to Sonprayag, a short local jeep to Gaurikund, then the sacred trek to the temple.
Cab journey through Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Agastmuni to Sonprayag — the last point private vehicles are permitted to go.
Local government-approved shared jeeps run from Sonprayag to Gaurikund. Private vehicles are not permitted on this stretch. Jeeps are available throughout the day and operate on the Char Dham yatra schedule.
The sacred trek from Gaurikund (1,982 m) climbs approximately 18 km to Kedarnath temple (3,583 m). Pony (ghoda), palki (doli), and helicopter services are available for those who cannot trek. The walk typically takes 6 – 8 hours ascending.
The 443 km Delhi–Sonprayag cab journey is best split over 2 days — giving you time to rest at Haridwar or Rishikesh and acclimatise before the mountain roads and the trek.
Depart Delhi by 5–6 AM. Arrive Haridwar by midday — attend Har Ki Pauri and take darshan. Drive to Rishikesh (25 km further) in the afternoon. Attend the Triveni Ghat Aarti in the evening. Overnight at Rishikesh.
Early morning departure from Rishikesh. Drive via Devprayag (Ganga–Alaknanda sangam), Rudraprayag, and Agastmuni to Sonprayag (~200 km, 5–7 hrs on mountain roads). Check in at Sonprayag guesthouse overnight.
Take local jeep from Sonprayag to Gaurikund (5 km). Begin the 18 km trek to Kedarnath early morning. The ascent typically takes 6–8 hours on foot. Ponies and palkis are available at Gaurikund for those who need them. Overnight at Kedarnath.
Early morning darshan at Kedarnath temple (arrives with Mangala Aarti at 4 AM if you wish). Descend to Gaurikund (5–6 hrs on foot), local jeep back to Sonprayag, and begin return cab to Delhi or continue onward to Badrinath for the Char Dham circuit.
Approximately 18 km from Gaurikund (1,982 m) to Kedarnath temple (3,583 m). The trail is well-marked and passes through Jungle Chatti, Bhim Bali, Linchauli, and Kedarnath base camp. Total altitude gain of approximately 1,600 metres.
For those unable to trek, pony (ghoda) and palki (doli) services are available from Gaurikund — pre-book at the government counters. Helicopter services from Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi helipad cover the Kedarnath stretch and must be booked in advance, especially in season.
All pilgrims must register for the Kedarnath Yatra on the official Uttarakhand Devasthanam website (devasthanamboardregistration.in or the Char Dham portal). Biometric registration is mandatory at designated counters before the trek. Complete this before reaching Sonprayag.
The temple opens in late April or May (on Akshaya Tritiya) and closes in October/November (on Diwali/Bhai Dooj) when the idol is transferred to Ukhimath for the winter. May, June, and September–October offer the most stable conditions for the trek.
Warm layered clothing (temperatures near 3°C–12°C even in summer), trekking shoes with grip, rainwear (monsoon season), personal medicines, a torch, and energy snacks. Do not carry unnecessary luggage — cloak rooms are available at Gaurikund.
Kedarnath is one of the four Char Dham shrines. Many pilgrims combine it with Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath on a single yatra. Our Char Dham Yatra taxi covers the full circuit with Innova, Crysta, and Tempo Traveller from Delhi, Dehradun, or Haridwar.
Per-day rates for the cab journey to Sonprayag (443 km). The trip is best planned over 2 cab days — Day 1 to Haridwar/Rishikesh, Day 2 to Sonprayag.
| Vehicle | Seating | Per Day Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Ertiga | 6 + 1 | ₹5,000 / day | Small families (4–5 people) |
| Toyota Innova | 7 + 1 | ₹5,500 / day | Families — confident on mountain roads |
| Innova Crysta | 7 + 1 | ₹6,000 / day | Premium comfort for long mountain journey |
| Tempo Traveller | 12 – 17 | ₹10,000 – ₹14,000 / day | Large pilgrimage groups & Char Dham parties |
Fares are per cab day and cover fuel, driver allowance, and standard tolls. A typical Delhi–Kedarnath cab package runs 4 to 5 days (2 days to Sonprayag, 1 day at trek base, 1–2 days return). Innova or Innova Crysta is strongly recommended for the Rishikesh–Sonprayag mountain road — the gorge sections and switchbacks are challenging for sedans.
Sonprayag to Gaurikund (5 km) and all trek-related transport (pony, palki, helicopter) are arranged locally and are not included in the cab fare. Call +91 81261 28302 for a complete multi-day Kedarnath yatra package fare covering all cab days.
